Chapter Eight Wag the Dog
THERE were seven of them, and they were all standing in front of Ezra and staring up at him with wide shining eyes and disconcertingly expectant faces. It was a decided contrast to the conference of a few days previously, when Ezra and Callum had been staring out at a much larger sea of adult lycans.
“Um,” said Ezra uncertainly. All seven children looked even more eager, though for what, Ezra wasn’t sure. Nor was he sure why Wyn had thought that it was a good idea to make him the sole entertainer for an audience of minors. She had told him about ten minutes before the doorbell rang this morning that there would be children coming over.
“Who’s coming here for what now?” “Some of the pack parents are going out for the day and leaving their kids with us.”
Ezra had stared at her in horror for long minutes. “Us? As in you and me? Me, in charge of children?” Yep, he definitely should’ve gone to work today, Saturday or not.
Wyn had turned away from the stove to arch a brow at Ezra. “What’s the big deal? They’ll be here for a few hours, and then they’ll go home.”
“Sure, but in one piece? You can’t leave me in charge of children!”
“I won’t be leaving you in charge of anything. I’ll be in charge. All you have to do is bask in the attention they will certainly give you.”
Now that Ezra was staring down into their curious faces, he was pretty sure that this wasn’t going to be as easy as Wyn had attempted to make him believe.
One of the children, a girl with two blond plaits, stepped up close. She was particularly familiar, as Ezra recalled her being opinionated and bossy. She did not disappoint. “Uncle Ezra? Do you know how to play hide-and-seek?”
“Um, yes?”
“Will you play with us?”
“Uh….” Ezra regarded her with uncertainty.
“I’m sure that Uncle Ezra would love to play hide-and-seek with all of you.” Wyn was smiling, and there was a devious twinkle in her eye. “Maybe you should run off to hide while Uncle Ezra counts to one hundred.” Before anything else was said, all seven children turned and ran from the room.
“Oh my God,” breathed out Ezra to an empty room. “Now what?”
Wyn blinked in surprise. “Um, you count to one hundred and then go find them?” She patted his arm consolingly before turning and escaping to the kitchen.
After reaching one hundred, and then adding on an extra fifty, Ezra finally conceded that it was time to go and search out the children.
Children were exhausting, Ezra decided an hour later as he collapsed into a living room chair. He closed his eyes, but was jerked from his rest when one of the boys, Konnar, yelled, “Aunt Wyn!”
“Did you all have fun playing hide-and-seek?”
“Yes!”
“But Uncle Ezra is bad at it,” bossy Allison told her. Ezra considered pointing out that his size precluded him from using the best hiding spots, but he’d probably lose that argument.
